Colonial Style at Hosteria La Cienega!

Hosteria La Cienega - colonial hacienda

Just about anyone who's anyone in Ecuador's history has stayed at Hosteria La Cienega, and following its conversion to a first-class boutique hotel - now you can too! This former colonial mansion can now form a unique experience during your holiday in Ecuador as you enjoy being a part of the hacienda's continuing story.

Originally built in 1695 for the Escalera y Velasco family, over the years the hacienda has played host to the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, the Independence hero General Antonio Jose de Sucré, and the first president of Ecuador, Juan Jose Flores, among many others. As part of the conversion, the history of the hacienda has been beautifully preserved, with period touches around every corner.

Of course that doesn't mean that modern conveniences are lacking, and La Cienega offers everything today's discerning traveller requires with the touch of class that has always been the hacienda's hallmark.

Sample Itinerary

Cotopaxi Day One - Travel to Hosteria La Cienega

This morning we'll travel south from Quito along the "Avenue of the Volcanoes" as we head towards La Cienega. We'll be rewarded with some stunning views of the Cotopaxi National Park during the two hour drive, before arriving at La Cienega in time for lunch. You will then have the rest of the afternoon free to relax and enjoy the hosteria's private gardens.

Quilotoa Day Two - Lake Quilotoa

Today we will head away from Cotopaxi to the volcanic Quilotoa lake. We guarantee you've never seen anything like it - climbing up to the lip of the (extinct!) volcano, you look down into a bluey-green lake that seems utterly surreal. You can then head down to the lake and take out a rowing-boat or canoe, before coming back up by horse to your waiting driver. In the evening, we'll head back to Quito for another night in the capital.

Cotopaxi Day Four - Cotopaxi National Park

The snow-capped mountain of Cotopaxi is one of the enduring symbols of Ecuador, and no holiday in Ecuador is complete without a trip to see it. Today we will take you on a full-day tour through the Cotopaxi National Park, giving you the chance for some breathtaking photos before we head back to La Cienega for some of the hosteria's delicious traditional food.

Back to Quito Day Four - Back to Quito

Your Andean adventure will come to an end today as, after a relaxing final morning here at Hosteria La Cienega, we take you back by private car to Quito, where you'll arrive in the late afternoon.
