It’s been a busy decade for the Tunguruhua volcano, which makes up part of the Cordillera chain of mountains in Ecuador and lies around 85 miles South-East of the capital Quito. Having been in state of rest since 1918, the volcano became active again in 1999 and has seen several major eruptions since then. Now it is erupting again.
The authorities in Ecuador have taken measures to ensure the safety of those in the proximity of the volcano issuing a red-alert for the region and evacuating people from the slopes of the volcano. Security forces are also preventing anyone from entering the area. We advise that anyone planning to visit Ecuador anytime soon, or anyone in Ecuador at the moment avoid the area. The effects of the eruption as yet do not extend past the immediate area and international air travel has not been affected.
