The tsunami wave that resulted from last weeks earthquake off the coast of Japan has struck the Galapagos Islands. Luckily, by the time it reached the islands, its destructive power had diminished and the effects have been minor, with police reporting no major damages. Most tourist activities have resumed on the islands, including all flights to and from the mainland.
Whilst not on the scale of what Japan is facing, many on the Galapagos Islands have still been affected, with the wave having moved up to a third of a mile inland in places. The places which have been affected the most are the low lying areas, particularly Santa Cruz, where buildings have been damaged. People on the island are working hard to clean up after the wave hit and the Ecuadorian government has sent 6 tons of food, water and aid to the island to help the relief efforts there and in particularly, to help the 260 families on Santa Cruz and San Cristobal islands whose fishing boats and livelihoods were destroyed. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this tragic event. We will keep you updated with any more news we hear relating to the Galapagos and Ecuador.
