Genovesa Island - a birder's dream

See Genovesa on your Ecuador Holiday

The tiny, horseshoe-shaped island of Genovesa is a bird-watchers dream. Many birds choose to nest here, including red-footed nad masked boobies, frigatebirds, storm petrels, finches, lava gulls, and many more. So popular is it, in fact, with the islands' birds that it is referred to locally simply as Bird Island!

Most cruises make their landing at Darwin Bay, on the southern side of the island, which is the collapsed cone of an ancient volcano. As you step off the boat you immediately find yourself in the middle of a huge sea-bird colony. Those of you with fears of being dive-bombed needn't worry, however: the birds are very friendly!

From Darwin Bay, you can head to the southern tip of Genovesa, to Prince Philip's Steps - a steep path which leads up to some cliffs and which is home to up to 150,000 pairs of red-footed boobies and an even larger colony of wedge-rumped petrels.

Heading into the interior of the island, we pass into a low scrub forest of palo santo trees and prickly-pears. The interior is home to four types of Darwin's finches and the little-seen Galapagos Dove.

Check out our Galapagos Calendar to find out the optimal time for visiting all of the islands.
